![]() Type 1 diabetes most frequently occurs in children, teens, and young adults, but it can arise in people of any age and of any size. ![]() ![]() High glucose levels can damage blood vessels and cause serious problems with the eyes, kidneys, heart, and nerves. This results in high levels of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood. About 5% of these cases-or around 1.9 million people-are type 1 diabetes, a chronic disease in which the body makes little to no insulin. Over 37 million people in the United States have diabetes.
